When is the Best Time for Braces?
The optimal age for orthodontic treatment often falls between 11 and 15 years old. After close analysis of skeletal age, the shape of the face, understanding the familiar lineage, and waiting to treat until the patient is closer to being done with growth, despite the teeth being age-appropriate,  may be our best option.
With certain facial types, it is predictable that a patient will outgrow what we finish in the adolescent stage. Therefore, waiting for a more adult level of growth would be a wiser investment. This period is ideal for several reasons:
- Permanent Teeth Eruption: By around age 12, most permanent teeth have fully emerged. This makes it easier to identify issues such as crooked teeth, gaps, and bite problems, which are less likely to correct themselves naturally.
- Psychosocial Benefits: At this age, many children are already familiar with braces through peers, making them more receptive to treatment. The social stigma associated with braces is minimal, as many classmates may also be undergoing similar treatment.
- Metabolic Advantages: Children in this age range generally have faster metabolisms. This can contribute to a shorter treatment duration and potentially reduce discomfort during the process.
Why Choose Orthodontic Treatment?
Starting orthodontic treatment during adolescence offers multiple benefits:
- Enhanced Treatment Efficiency: Orthodontic intervention can address dental issues before they develop into more complex problems, often leading to quicker and more effective outcomes.
- Improved Compliance: Children are often more motivated to wear braces when they see their friends doing the same, which can lead to better treatment adherence.
- Less Complex Future Treatments: Addressing orthodontic issues may reduce the complexity of future treatments, ensuring a smoother overall experience.
